2005 MEDIBANK INTERNATIONAL
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
January 12, 2005
M. MIRNYI/J. Johansson
4-1 (ret.)
JOACHIM JOHANSSON
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Very simple, Joachim. What happened?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I pulled my hamstring muscle a little bit yesterday. I tried to go out there today, and it was sore when I was practicing this morning. I tried to go out there for a few games, but I felt I couldn't give 100%. At this level, there's no way now you can win a match.
Q. How far gone is it?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I don't know. I haven't really checked with a doctor yet. We just tried to get it good for this match today. But I'm going to go to Melbourne this evening and I will see what the doctor says over there.
Q. How does it feel? Does it feel bad, or does it feel like...
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I mean, if it wouldn't have feel -- if it would have felt good, I would have kept playing. Obviously, it doesn't feel great, so that's why I stopped.
Q. Left or right?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Right leg.
Q. Is it an injury that happened yesterday, or is it an old injury?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: No, I never had it before. I got it in the second set yesterday. I don't really know what I did, but I started to feel it a little bit. After my hit today I got more and more stiff.
Q. Is it an injury that might keep you out of the Australian Open, or is it just something where you need two days' rest?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I think it's too early to say. At the moment it doesn't feel great, but hopefully I'll be back practicing at the end of this week.
Q. Were you half expecting when you went out there today to have to pull out?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: No, I never look at it that way. I mean, if you walk on court, you're always going to try to finish the match. But when I walked on, it didn't feel great, (inaudible) when I was playing the match either.
Q. Even if you do make it to the Australian Open, how much of a setback is this to your preparation?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: No, not really. I mean, I got a lot of matches, and I've been here for a long time so I feel I'm playing good. Obviously, if I'm going to be playing next week, then I'm going to be fit for (fight?).
